Marvel’s first female lead superhero movie.
Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck
Captain Marvel is an extraterrestrial Kree warrior who finds herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and the Skrulls. Living on Earth in 1995, she keeps having recurring memories of another life as U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. With help from Nick Fury, Captain Marvel tries to uncover the secrets of her past while harnessing her special superpowers to end the war with the evil Skrulls.
I went into this movie with trepidation. I hoped it was just a good superhero flick but I was also worried it would just be a 2 hour lecture on feminism – I shouldn’t have been worried because the feminism was at a minimum.
What I was really surprised at was how absolutely charming Brie Larson was. Off screen she’s a whining feminazi and I find most of the stuff she comes out with to be eye wateringly stupid, but in this film, she was great fun and pretty darn foxy too!
All in all, this is a typical Marvel film and doesn’t really push the boundaries or add to anything new to the franchise, it plays it safe. And as the saying goes, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.
I’m just concerned that perhaps rumours of superhero fatigue are real and if Marvel don’t start to add some new ingredients to their 10 year old recipe, people will eventually tire of the same old same old.
Nick Fury. What the hell happened to this character? I understand he’s meant to get a little bitter and tougher around the edges as time goes on, but in this film he’s the comic relief! It’s as stupid a decision as it was to make Batman the comic relief in the terrible Justice League (#ReleaseTheSnyderCut).
Sadly, the CGI in this movie is left wanting – not as bad as Black Panther but it’s hardly A Grade stuff. Again, are Marvel getting a little complacent as time goes on?
The film never seems to get out of second gear and the grande finale is ultimately underwhelming.
SCORE : 5/10
I’ll be honest, it’s not the greatest Marvel movie to date and I think the Marvel films are relatively hit and miss, but if you are a Marvel fanboy (or girl) you’ll lap this up quicker than a Flerken gobbles up a… now, now, no spoilers!
What do the others say?
Don’t just take my word for it, have a look to see what the big players like Rotten Tomatoes (RT), IMBD and Meteoritic are saying. Take the RT Audience Score with a grain of salt because people are giving it negative votes in protest at something or another. Sad twats. Anyway, theres a featurette too.
